Inspector’s Returns
Coaching Stock
including Diesel & Electric units
(1959–1965)
Condemned
4 SUB at Hove in May 1963
© Ian Nolan
This file contains
summaries of some weekly returns submitted by Rolling Stock Inspectors
regarding condemned coaching stock and the disposal of such to breakers. I have
added x ‘Set xxx’ information and this applies to any coaches in that line of
text to the right. ‘Loose’ coaches have no further information shown. There are
also items of correspondence regarding other issues such as transfers of
vehicles to departmental stock etc.
Some entries for
1960 are missing.
Where information
has been added for clarity by BloodandCustard this is
shewn in a different font and titles not unlined.
Abbreviations
There is a certain
amount of abbreviations and internal jargon, but most of it is fairly
understandable in the context.
Some frequently used
ones are such as V – 3-60 (vehicle last varnished in March 1960), CI (cast
iron) brake blocks (NF is non-ferrous a-lso known as
TBL blocks), E, H or Heavy (next classified repair due on the vehicle) [this
was before the later BR system of C1, C2, C4, C5, C6 etc].
SP dates (also S
Proposal) were the Inspector’s proposed dates for the units to go into works.
Several Inspectors
used abbreviations such as M.S.B. for Motor Brake Second. In the interests of
clarity and modern computer searches these have been amended to the current
convention (MBS etc).
There are others
such as GD (former Guildford & Dorking) stock, ‘Contractor’ stock (refers
to former contractor-built units, the GD stock nos.1285 – 1310 (later nos.4300
– 4325) on shorter underframes and nos.1496 – 1524 (later nos.4325 – 4350), as
these units had a lot of detail differences to the bulk of the SUB fleet.
There are some
references to changing buffers on suburban units when reforms were needed, the
standard arrangement being both MBS coaches were ‘female’, the original centre
trailer ‘male’ at both ends, and the augmenting vehicle as ‘female’ one end,
and ‘male’ the other.
Letters & Numbering
There are frequent
references to the conventions of numbering /lettering various items on a
vehicle to identify them. Bogies were A + B (driver over the A bogie) with the
adjacent trailer being B + A, so a 4-car sets had bogies arranged ABBAABBA.
(was different on 3-car sets of course ABBABA).
Wheels were numbered
round a coach with No.1 wheel under the offside of the cab, then No.2 behind on
that bogie, No.3 wheel was the leading one on the next bogie followed by No.4,
then No.5 wheel was opposite, then nos.6 – 8. The driver sat over No. 8 wheel
and the axles were therefore 1 & 8 pair, 2 & 7 pair, 3 & 6 pair and
4 & 5 pair. Trailers had similar arrangements, a small white downward
pointing arrow low down on the bodyside pointed at No. 1 wheel.
Doors were lettered
so an 8-bay suburban motor coach had A – H (A at the brakevan
end) and 10 compartment trailers were A – K (as I was not used).
Lights
& Lamps
Windows are
described usually as ‘lights’ so there were door droplights, ¼ lights, large
sidelights (usually shown as L/S/L), fixed vent lights, sliding vent lights
etc.
The driver’s window
was the driver’s observation light.
Light bulbs were
called ‘lamps’.
BloodandCustard hopes these notes
help to explain this file and make understanding the notes easier. If we have
got anything wrong, please let us know!
More importantly BloodandCustard is deeply grateful to two people in respect
of these notes:
Glen Woods for
allowing John Atkinson to borrow these notebooks which are lodged with the Bluebell Railway Archives.
Glen is similarly working on many other documents
too and is the author behind that excellent book ‘Lancing 1956’ (St Petroc InfoPublishing - ISBN 978
0956 7655 29).
John Atkinson for
painstakingly copying out these notebooks; his intention being to (hopefully)
make this information more easily available to many.
Finally, if anyone
can add to this subject, we would be most grateful. In addition, there is much
discussion on John Atkinson’s Blood and Custard Discussion Group on Facebook.

There are several suggestions regarding its
ultimate disposal none of which have yet been finalised, but in the meantime no
action whatever should be taken regarding the stripping of any equipment until
instructions are issued from this office.

Displacement of Steam Coaching Stock.
Your letter of the 1st May 1961
The 17
vehicles formed in 4-4 coach “E” sets , plus one odd BSK, to Route Restriction
1, have been inspected, they are in reasonable condition, both interior,
exterior, the corridor side building rails in some instances are a little puffy
in the centre of the vehicles, particularly below the droplights in the dummy
doors, but they should not cause any undue concern for the remainder of their
extended and expected life, and should take another intermediate repair in 1962
if so desired.
The 17

found, I give below the numbers of the vehicles seen and reason for their
withdrawal subject to your approval.

Van No. 2464, 26tons, Restriction ‘0’ 53’ body
The 24 vans
berthed on the single line at Worthy Down, I have selected Van No. 2464 as the

good order. The underframe headstocks are thin and bent behind the buffers and
the bogies are fairly good. It will, or course require lifting and painting
inside and out. The gangway diaphragms are perished but the frames and scissors
are fairly sound. All the cells and dynamo are intact and appear in good
condition. The main steam and vacuum pipes require testing, the lagging from
the former is adrift in places.

Thanks for

requested not to break-up Set 385 Push & Pull as the Bluebell Railway are

regret any inconvenience this may cause you but trust you will be able to

WORK STUDY ACCOMMODATION
With reference
to your letter of 1st November, I note that M.P. Breakdown Van No.
DS 1595 has been taken over by a work study group, but in view of the fact that
I have only this week been strongly pressed by the Accountant to dispose of all

ask the people at present using the van to vacate it.
Will you
kindly follow up on these lines and let me know the result.

WORK STUDY ACCOMMODATION
Referring to
your letter of the 9th instant, I have seen Mr White who is in
charge of the work study group at Hither Green and informed him that he must
vacate the van No. DS 1595 ex Motive Power Staff Van. He regrets having to
vacate it because although realising he had no right to take the van he must
ask for a Work Study Coach to be made available at Hither Green and in the
meantime would like permission to retain this van.
I might
mention they have fitted the van with light and running water etc. It is in
reasonable condition and I recommend it be transferred to this group rather
than incur the unnecessary expense of a further conversion.

ACCOMMODATION FOR WORK STUDY TEAMS
The South West Line Manager requires an open
type coach at Richmond for Work Study purposes. It will be necessary for the
vehicle to be fitted with electric lighting and power points for three electric
heaters, together with padlocks for the doors and as it will move from point to
point over approximately three years I would like you to call a meeting with
Mr. Taylor’s representative and also Mr. Keeling to determine exactly what is
required and where the coach will be stationed from time to time, this latter
being vitally necessary in regard to power supplies, which the Outdoor
Machinery Section will be expected to provide.
Will you please, therefore, proceed on these
lines and let me have, in due course, an estimated cost of the repairs and
conversion, whilst in regard to the facilities to be provided by the Outdoor
Machinery Section, I am asking Mr. Hoare to let me have this information.
Mr. Tozer will earmark a suitable vehicle and
so far as traffic representation at the meeting is concerned contact should be
made with Waterloo Extension 2681/2.
