This page covers the formations of the Birdcage Trio sets including their original SECR numbers; the Southern Railway renumbered both the individual coach and set numbers between 1923 and 1929. In terms of greater details on these Birdcage Trio sets there is much recommended reading by historical authors David Gould and Mike King.

Trio ‘A’ Sets
(SR 529-542 & 563-565)

There were two versions of the trio ‘A’ sets. All employed 54’ 1” composite coaches but the first version had 50’1” brake coaches instead of 54’1”. During construction there was also an alteration to the bodywork styling.

The ‘Birdcage’ ‘A’ sets were introduced by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SE&CR) between 1909 and 1910. Thirty-seven sets were built by Ashford Works and Metropolitan Amalgamated RC&W (later Metro-Cammell).

Each three-coach set comprised:

Brake Lavatory Composite (2nd /3rd class) which was later declassified to Brake Lavatory Third 6-compartment 50’1” over body (SE&CR diag. no.162).

Lavatory Composite 7-compartment 54’1” over body (SE&CR diag. nos.314).

Brake Third 6-compartment 50’1” over body (SE&CR diag. no.155).

and

Brake Lavatory Composite (2nd /3rd class) which was later declassified to Brake Lavatory Third 6-compartment 54’1” over body (SE&CR diag. no. 158)

Lavatory Composite 7-compartment 54’1” over body (SE&CR diag. no. 313)

Brake Composite 7-compartment 54’1” over body (SE&CR diag. no. 159).

Sets 104–107 (renumbered 124–127 during 1915) were originally constructed as four-coach with an additional composite (1063-1066). With the exception of set 127 (Southern Railway set 674), these were reduced to three-coach c.1917. So, also constructed were:

Composite 7-compartment 50’1” over body (SE&CR Diagram no.304). Built in 1910 and intended to provide four-coach sets.

Trio ‘C’ Sets
(SR 567-638)

The 60ft three-coach ‘Birdcage’ ‘C’ sets were introduced by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SE&CR) between 1912 and 1915. Built by Ashford Works, Metropolitan Amalgamated RC&W (later Metro-Cammell) and Cravens at ten-feet longer than previous builds, these sixty-two sets were the most numerous type of ‘Birdcage’ design.

Each three-coach set comprised:

Brake Lavatory Composite (2nd /3rd class) which was later declassified to Brake Lavatory Third (SE&CR Diagram no.162)

Lavatory Composite (1st /2nd class) which was declassified to Lavatory Composite 1st /3rd class (SE&CR diag nos.314 & 315 /SR diag. nos.2314 & 2315). These Composites were built in batches with two distinct body side variations. The first batch (diag no.314) had two wide sidelights on each side for the central saloon; the later batch diag no.315) had one wide, one narrow sidelight and one droplight for the central saloon

Brake Third (SE&CR Diagram no.160).

The final ten ‘C’ sets were steel-panelled following on from coach 1319 (SR 5494); coach 1336 (SR 3464) was not equipped with a birdcage and had two end windows instead.

Note the position of the tail lamp – presumably not removed due to the off-side platform, its reach-height and that the stock is about to travel a short distance as ecs.

Liveries

From David Gould’s excellent research‡1, SE&CR coaches were originally outshopped in lined Dark Lake livery (a rich Purple Lake fine-lined with Gold & edged with Vermilion). The painting of set numbers on coach ends was first noticed in 1911.

Around the time of the introduction of the Birdcage sets (1912-1913) the SE&CR started applying a light maroon or red-brown shade with gold lining to its coaches. The 60’ Birdcage sets of 1912 were lined in yellow with gold lettering (blocked and shaded). Class numbers were 11” high, coach numbers 2½” and SE&CR 3”.

Plain Umber appears to have been introduced by the SECR from 1916; this being very similar to LBSCR Umber with the last of the Dark Lake stock being repainted in 1919.

With SE&CR varnishing undertaken at Ashford (no records), the Southern Railway painting dates (Lancing Carriage Works) for each set are stated (not individual coaches, so in the table below read downward in these two columns). Further records are being slowly added as time permits and further information is sought.

Lancing & CM&EE Record Cards

Under the Southern Railway it could be presumed that these ‘C’ sets would have been repainted Olive soon after grouping. However, contemporary reports from 1927 indicate many ‘C’ sets were still in SECR livery albeit with SR set numbers. Indeed, these sets were renumbered and repainted into Olive Green across a five-year period between 1924 and 1929. In terms of the Olive livery many coaches did not appear to have lining around the sidelights.

However, none of these Lancing record cards provide pre-May 1929 painting /varnishing release dates although the renumber /repainting dates are known. It is therefore presumed a different recording system was in place (possibly at Ashford) during the twenties (prior to the significant changes at Lancing Carriage Works from 1927) and possibly right up to introduction of the record-card system in 1929 when Lancing came fully on-stream. Certainly, the earliest of those record-cards examined to-date appear to start in May 1929.

Similarly, some record cards are simply missing; particularly for sets disbanded during or shortly after World War Two.

Finally, the cards issued post-nationalisation have yet to surface. These give British Railways painting /varnishing release dates, including those sets which received Crimson Lake (CL) livery.

Yet many of the Lancing record cards do provide reformation or disposal details post-Nationalisation, so were still updated (albeit not for repainting or revarnishing under British Railways). Accordingly further research is needed in this area.

Repainting

The following table provides an overview of the ‘Trio’ sets. Research is still ongoing and collaborated information sought. Post-war some sets were repainted at Eastleigh.

All repainting dates are given where known although little is available for post-nationalisation repainting dates with many sets never receiving Crimson Lake livery; some withdrawn in Malachite Green. Lancing Carriage Works started using Crimson Lake in March 1949 and none of the Birdcage sets appear to have been repainted in 1956 (although some received a A2 varnish) and did not receive the post-1956 (darker) BR(S) Green.

However, an indication towards sets those sets potentially repainted into Crimson Lake can be gained from the 10-year painting cycle whilst remaining mindful that sets approaching withdrawal were unlikely to receive new paint.

Varnishing

Varnishing dates are only given if the first painting at Lancing appears to be late in the nineteen-thirties (the arrow ‘>’ after the first varnishing date indicating more than one varnish taking place before painting) else the set was varnished at least once (some sets several times) after the last known painting release date. Intermediate varnishing dates have therefore been omitted for clarity.

For example:

Set 534 was varnished on 24th March 1931 and again on 10th May 1933 before being painted on 12th June 1934 (it was varnished four more times after that date). This set first received SR Olive in March 1929.

Set 542 was last painted (Malachite) on 30th January 1943 but was varnished again on 1st March 1946.

Post-war some sets were varnished at Slades Green (both Slades Green station and depot names were changed to Slade Green on 2nd September 1953).

Trio Set Vehicle Redeployments

Listed at the bottom of the table are those set numbers (the complete set is not shewn) into which full-trio ‘C’ sets were incorporated (compared to movement of individual coaches).

Coaches would also be redeployed into pull-push sets and many were sent to the Isle of Wight (albeit without their roof observatories).

Some ‘C’ sets were renumbered to make way for the new BR Mk1 ‘3-Cor’ corridor sets whilst other set numbers were reused after withdrawal of the ‘C’ set. For example, the number range 600 to 619 were reused for the 1959 Maunsell coach rebuilds into two-coach pull-push sets.
