The following covers Glen Woods’ research into the Southern Region’s BR Standard 4-Cor set nos.866 to 891 from 1952 to 1966©.

On Sunday 3rd June 1956 second class was abolished on British Railways (it had already ceased on the corresponding continental boat train services). As part of its abolition, third class was simply renamed second class. Accordingly, coach designations such as TK (third corridor) changed to SK (second corridor).

Throughout this document, unless otherwise stated, the sets remained as 4-sets with the formation as previously shown.

These sets were delivered in 1952 the initial sets were 866 to 876 and it should be noted that some of the sets were booked to have the TK and the CK switched round.  By June of that year, 866 to 870 and 876 were on the South Eastern with 871 to 875 on the South Western. Service Allocations at that time were as set out below.
