LSWR Cross Country Sets
(130-324)
Outshopped in Crimson Lake livery 15th
January 1952, 3 LAV set 130 at Fareham on 23rd May
1953, with the number of BTK S2983S (nearest) being clearly visible. Although
the First-class 1s on the composite arent visible (even when enhanced) it
is anticipated that they were still present. © Pamlin

310-314 & 324
From 1904 onwards the LSWR
started building four coach Cross Country sets resulting in some seventy-five
sets in service prior to the Grouping. Set changes came following a fall in
traffic with the Great Depression of 1929-1930 alongside a drive to eliminate
gas lighting and wooden underframes. Accordingly, the Third-class coaches were
removed and some First-class compartments in the Composite Lavatory coaches downgraded
to Third-class. Many of the Third-class coaches became Loose vehicles (with
those documented on the Lancing Works Record Cards as becoming Loose noted in
the tables below).
In 1946 the Southern
started building new main line coaches to Bulleids
designs with the BR Mk1 stock following after nationalisation.
Maunsell main line stock was increasingly cascaded
onto secondary services with the now-antiquated ex.LSWR
stock related to lessor duties. It was not unknown for some pre-grouping sets
to work just one return trip a day.
Sets were already being
withdrawn under Southern Railway ownership. Most of these sets were withdrawn
by end-1956 (on paper set 139 made it to 26th January 1957 and set
314 wasnt withdrawn until June 1957) although many of the Loose Thirds made it
through to 1957. Some departmental vehicles and camping coaches survived for
longer.
Numbering
Built to route-restriction
2, the Southern Railway renumbered these sets and the SR numbers are quoted
throughout, particularly as many the details of these changes (including LSWR coach
& set numbering) are covered in Mike Kings and Gordon Weddells books (see
Appendix 5).
* vehicle entered
preservation (see table)
Liveries
When
the sets were re-numbered by the Southern Railway during the nineteen-twenties
this was probably undertaken during a full repaint.
Whilst the pre-nationalisation Lancing Carriage Works Record
Cards survive most of those for 1948-on are currently missing. Accordingly
there are few specific dates on Crimson Lake livery, so only an informed
consideration can be made as to whether sets carried this livery (or not) based
around factors such as the last known paint-date, the ten-year painting cycle and
withdrawal dates.
Lancing
Carriage Works was still releasing repainted stock in (post-war) SR Malachite
Green early February 1949 with Crimson Lake (and Cream) appearing at least by
March 1949. Early-on, some Crimson Lake liveried coaches were waist-lined
although it is not yet known if any of these ex.LSWR
sets had this lining applied.
The Southern Third-class 3 was usually removed from the coach
doors by BR during first varnish or repaint and BR Gill Sans carriage numbers
would also have been applied at this time.
Being
pre-nationalisation stock, under British Railways the coach numbers carried S-prefix and (after
May 1951) S-suffix with coaches being modified during their next varnish or
repaint. These respectively denoted Southern Region allocation and Southern
Railway (or earlier) design. The May 1951 edict required carriage numbering to
be on the right-hand end of each coach.
However,
many of these ex.LSWR sets would have been withdrawn
by British Railways still in pre-nationalisation SR green, albeit with BR
number styles (including S-prefix & S-suffix on individual coach numbers) having
been adopted during one of the 2½-yearly varnishing cycles. It is believed that
none of these ex.LSWR
Cross Country were outshopped in the darker BR(S) Green-livery (as applied
from July 1956-on).
In general, the last Crimson Lake & Cream (CLC)
vehicle outshopped from Lancing carriage works appear to be loose-allocated
High Window Maunsell SK S1376S on 17th
July 1956 which followed set 466 (all of its eight
coaches variously outshopped between 18th June 1956 and 10th
July 1956) and individual coach 7964 (from CLC Set 440) along with Loose Second
Open 1218. The first BR(S) Green-livery set outshopped by Lancing was corridor
set 974 on 11th July 1956 and the on the 18th
July 1956 Bulleid SK S61S was the first repainted
from Crimson Lake & Cream into BR(S) Green-livery.
Abolition of Second Class
Third- class was
designated second-class following the abolition of second-class
by British Railways on
Sunday 3rd June 1956. The third-class 3 being removed usually
during varnishing or repainting.
