Set Numbering Conventions

BR(S) convention meant each set was normally arranged with the coach conveying first-class (CK) positioned adjacent to the higher-numbered BTK. On four coach sets this convention also positioned the corridor to the compartments on the same-side placing first-class towards the middle of each four-coach set.

Liveries

Original livery was lined Olive with the lining being dropped c.1935. Malachite followed and Lancing Carriage works was still releasing repainted stock in SR Malachite Green early February 1949 with Crimson Lake (and Cream) appearing at least by March 1949.

The last Crimson Lake & Cream (CLC) vehicle outshopped from Lancing carriage works appear to be loose-allocated High Window Maunsell SK S1376S on 17th July 1956 which followed set 466 (all of its eight coaches variously outshopped between 18th June 1956 and 10th July 1956) and individual coach 7964 (from CLC Set 440) along with Loose Second Open 1218.

The first BR Green-livery set outshopped by Lancing was set 974 on 11th July 1956 and the on the 18th July 1956 Bulleid SK S61S was the first coach repainted from Crimson Lake & Cream into Green-livery.

Abolition of Second Class

Third-class was designated second-class following the abolition of second-class by British Railways on Sunday 3rd June 1956. In the tables below coaches are described as Third-class unless they were inserted into a set after 3rd June 1956 when Second Class is used.

(467 & 468)

Sets 467 and 468 comprised Maunsell 59’ Restriction 4 stock. Built at Eastleigh Works these had low windows and six-compartment brakes. Formed 25th October 1928 (set 467) and 9th November 1928 (set 468) both to HO order no. E160 in lined Olive livery. Allocated to the South Eastern Division (SED).

The order of the set’s coaches changed between the 13th June 1955 and 19th September 1955 Appendices to Carriage Working Notices. However, the exact date of this change is not recorded. The set was previously recorded as being in Lancing Works (A2 exam) between 24th September 1954 and 18th November 1954. The revised order was as follows:

BTK 4095 (diag.2101 LW)

CK 5158

Note - 19th September 1955 and 11th June 1956, 17th September 1956 Appendices to Carriage Working Notices each erroneously state TK no.1125 instead of no.1225 in set 468. This is corrected in the 17th June 1957 CWNA. The Lancing Works Record cards for TK 1125 confirms allocated ‘Loose’ during this period, nor is it included on any of the Lancing /CM&EE Record Cards for set 468.

Reformed September 1959 with coaches undergoing BR(S) Green repaint from post-War Malachite Green (outshopped 13th November 1959). BSK 4095, TK 767, CK 5158, CK 5157 & BCK 6584 displaced. Replacement coaches BSK 3550, SK 1217, CK 5591, CK 5155, BSK 3554 all ex.‘Loose’. BSK 3550 and BSK 3554 were ex.SECR Matchboarded Restriction ‘1’ Brake coaches.

SK 1225 (diag.2001 HW)
SK 768 (diag.2001 LW)
BSK 3554 (diag.169)

However, TK 768 was subsequently withdrawn November 1959 being replaced by TK 1142 (ex.’Loose’) presumably before the set re-entered traffic. 13th June 1960 Appendix to Carriage Working Notice confirms set as being formed:

Set 470 was formed for Eastbourne to London services. The high amount of first-class accommodation along with the small baggage capacity of the 6 compartment brakes (BTK) suggests this was intended for business commuters. The set often ran formed with Pullman coaches inserted in its middle.

Lewes Tunnel had been constructed with a reduced six-foot at its southern-end requiring an ‘OPPOS’ (i.e. no opposing moves) for certain bogie stock particularly post-1907 builds (until then coaches were 8’6” wide).

Because of this operational restriction at Lewes Tunnel, in May 1927 running of 9’ wide Restriction 4  stock ceased between Keymer Junction and Lewes; the exception being the Newhaven boat train (Restriction 4 stock) which was allowed to continue provided the opposite line was kept clear of traffic while the boat train traversed Lewes Tunnel with an ‘OPPOS’ in operation.

In 1935 the southern-end of Lewes tunnel was widened for the new trains to be used on the electrification scheme to Eastbourne and Ore (there is a visible step within the tunnel’s lining on the down side).

As a consequence, in May 1927 set 470 was transferred to Worthing to London services to operate with counterpart set 469 often with the addition of a Pullman (contemporary reports identify this arrangement as ongoing without set changes in 1933).

Circa 1933 set 470 was reduced to 3 coaches (acquiring CK 5656) following electrification of the Brighton mainline and Worthing routes and allocated to London, Bognor and Portsmouth services until they were electrified in July 1938, thence transferred to the Eastern section on ‘general workings’.

5th May 1941 Appendix to Carriage Working Notice (CWNA) shews set 470 working London, Ashford, Maidstone East, Minster and Ramsgate services.

June 1947 CWNA shews set 470 working London, Margate, Ramsgate, Dover and turnover set at Stewarts Lane.

30th June 1952 through to 11th June 1956 CWNA shews 3 Cor set 470 working London – Margate – Ramsgate – Dover – East Grinstead – Tunbridge Wells West – Brighton – Lewes – Eastbourne and turnover set at Stewarts Lane.

From 15th June 1957 set 470 was strengthened to 8 set being berthed at Bellingham or Walmer in the Summer and Bellingham in the Winter. However, set 470 is absent from the 15th June 1957 CWNA having been withdrawn.

2 Cor CWNA ‘E’ sets
(Restriction ‘1’)

(180 – 192, 217 – 219, 444 – 467)

There was a shortage of sets for CWNA ‘E’ Tonbridge – East Grinstead – Tunbridge Wells West - Brighton - Redhill - Reading Southern services and the decision was made to permanently split four-coach sets in half. Given their inter-related history all of the 2 Cor ‘E’ sets numbered 180 to 192. 217 to 219 and 444 to 467 have been covered here.

Maunsell Low-Window sets /set numbers 445 to 459 and 465 to 467 were reused for the 2 Cor sets in the number range 444 to 467.

In terms of the 2 Cor ‘E’ sets, all but two were withdrawn when the Redhill to Tonbridge line became diesel operated with 3R ‘Tadpole’ units in January 1965. Sets 190 & 192 (plus CK 5627 ex.219) survived until the closure of Eridge to Hailsham in June 1965 thus effectively ending the use of Restriction ‘1’ passenger stock.

Set End-Numbering

On 23rd December 1963 two coaches, BSO 4447 (set 450) and CK 5618 (set 189) were standing in the departure platform at Tunbridge Wells West and were damaged by a light engine. A report was made by one of the Waterloo inspectors (RH Griffiths) and it is interesting that his report identifies set 450 when BSO 4447 was reassigned to 2 Cor set 461. From this it can be reasonably assumed that the sent end numbers had not been updated. The report is covered under set 450.

Compilation

In terms of information sources Glen Woods regularly used the terms ‘Lancing’ and ‘Waterloo’ record cards although this is slightly misleading as the so-called ‘Waterloo’ record cards were maintained at the CM&EE Rolling Stock Records Office, based in Tooley Street, London Bridge (until 1966 when they moved to the newly constructed Southern House at Croydon).

The Carriage & Wagon Notice Appendices (CWNA) are a useful source of information although to contain discrepancies and could not cover changes made after publication.
