Sets 63 to 75 & 76

Built between March and May 1948, the Southern Railway-designed two-coach Bulleid ‘R’ sets (numbered 63 to 75) were employed on the Southern’s West of England routes to replace ageing Maunsell stock; entering traffic in June 1948. A further set (76) was formed circa June 1960.

Each 2-COR set comprised a Brake Third (BTK) nos.4371 – 4383 to diagram no.2123 and a Brake Composite (BCK) nos.6700 - 6712 to diagram no.2405.

Sets 63, 68, 69, 72 and 73 has their BTK (by then designated BSK) replaced by a CK in February 1965. At this time set 66 was augmented with a CK and RMB to become a 4 RMB set.

Liveries

On the Southern Region, coaching stock sets (and multiple-units) were normally repainted (and varnished) as a complete set leading to a significant degree of consistency within each set. Lancing Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early-February 1949 with Crimson Lake and Cream (CLC) appearing at least by March 1949.

As part of the abolition of Second Class on 3rd June 1956, Third-class was simply renamed Second-class with the prices and accommodation unchanged. Any remaining pre-nationalisation Third-class figures ‘3’ on coach sides were removed when they came into works for A2-varnishing (or repainting).

Around this time permission was given for the Southern Region to return to Green for its Corridor Passenger stock it rapidly embarked on a programme to repaint at the A2 repair for a number of vehicles in order to accelerate the return to Green. The last Crimson Lake & Cream vehicle outshopped from Lancing carriage works appears to have been on 17th July 1956 with the first BR Green set outshopped on 11th July 1956.

Entering traffic in June 1948 these ‘R’ sets were outshopped new in post-war Malachite Green livery but with ‘Southern’ omitted and coach numbers having an ‘S’ prefix. Only four ‘R’ sets received Crimson Lake & Cream livery, these being 63, 66, 67 & 68. The remainder survived long-enough in post-war Malachite to be repainted straight into BR(S) Green.

Set 63

Record cards for set 63 shew outshopping in CLC livery on 16th May 1955. There are then three outshopping dates for A2 exams (26th June 1957, 6th June 1959 & 5th October 1961) which were usually varnishes and it is known that Lancing often undertook repaints during A2 exams post-1956 to eliminate CLC livery. Whilst set 66 was subsequently outshopped from an E4 on 7th February 1964 (which would have included a repaint - Green livery) it is possible that Green livery was applied during the 1957 A2 exam.

Set 64

Record cards for set 64 shew outshopping from first E-exam (repaint) as being 21st August 1961 having received regular A2-exams in 1950, 1952, 1955, 1957 and 1959; revarnishing usually taking place on a two-yearly basis. Although eleven years is longer than the normal eight-year repainting cycle it is possible that (if in good condition) set 64’s post-war Malachite survived until 1961.

Set 66

Record cards for set 66 shew outshopping in CLC livery on 14th December 1955. There are then three outshopping dates for A2 exams (17th December 1957, 7th October 1959 & 8th February 1961) which were usually varnishes and it is known that Lancing often undertook repaints during A2 exams post-1956 to eliminate CLC livery. Whilst set 66 was subsequently outshopped from an E4 on 30th April 1963 (which would have included a repaint - Green livery) it is possible that Green livery was applied during the 1957 A2 exam.

Set 67

Record cards for set 67 shew outshopping in CLC livery on 28th February 1955. There are then three outshopping dates for A2 exams (11-Jun-57, 26-Jun-59 & 17th April 1961) but no further E4 exam. It is possible that Green livery was applied during the 1957 A2 exam.

Set 68

Record cards for set 68 shew outshopping in CLC livery on 31st May 1956. The subsequent A2 exam at Lancing (outshopped 16th May 1958) is annotated ‘G’ for Green repaint.

Set 76

Set formed circa June 1960 (probably for the Summer 1960 timetable) with BR(S) Green-liveried BCK 6713 (diag. no.2406) and BTK 4282 (diag. no.2125).
