New 4 Cor Sets

Southern Region’s BR Standard (Mk1) four-car corridor (4 Cor) sets nos.866 to 891 were introduced in 1952, being delivered in CLC livery. 4 Cor ‘S’ sets 866 to 870 were allocated to the London & South Eastern Division (SED) for London – Ramsgate – Dover and Hastings – Eastbourne – Western Region services; the remainder ‘J’ sets went to the South Western Division (SWD) with many of the original ‘C1-gauge’ four-coach sets being lengthened.

September 1953

By 21st September 1953 4 Cor ‘J’ set 880 had been augmented to a ‘J’ 8RB set on Bournemouth – York services and underwent the greatest number of reformations of the 4 Cor sets.

 

September 1955

By 19th September 1955 SWD 4 Cor ‘J’ sets 877 – 879 & 881 – 891 were allocated to Waterloo – Plymouth, Brighton – Portsmouth – Cardiff (WR), Brighton – Portsmouth – Plymouth and Brighton - Bournemouth services with SWD ‘F’ 7RB set 880 on Bournemouth – York services. SED 4 Cor ‘S’ sets 866 to 871 were operating London – Ramsgate – Dover services. SED ‘J’ 8-sets 873 – 875 were operating London – Ramsgate and SED ‘G’ set 876 (augmented to 6-coaches) on London – Tunbridge Wells West – Brighton services.

 

 

Set Numbering Conventions

BR(S) convention meant each set was normally arranged with the coach conveying first-class (CK) positioned adjacent to the higher-numbered BTK. Following delivery in 1952 some of the sets were booked to have the TK and the CK switched round.

This convention also positioned the corridor to the compartments on the same-side placing first-class towards the middle of each four-coach set. The other two coaches (BTK and SK) were also coupled with the corridor to the compartments being positioned on the same-side; this meant the two toilet compartments in the TK were placed adjacent to the BTK.

 

Abolition of Second Class

Third- class was designated second-class following the abolition of second-class by British Railways on Sunday 3rd June 1956. As these sets only carried a number ‘1’ to denote first-class this change was essentially a paper one. In the table below coaches are described as Third-class unless they were inserted into a set after 3rd June 1956 when Second Class is used.

 

UIC banding

Whilst in Crimson Lake & Cream livery none of these sets carried the sixties-introduced ‘UIC’ yellow cantrail band denoting first class. In Green livery the Mk1 coaches forming these sets did not carry BR carriage roundels; these being reserved for special sets (for example, ‘The Royal Wessex’ sets) and multiple-unit motor-coaches.

This set underwent many reformations which were not fully recorded in the Lancing & Waterloo records but are covered in the available Appendices to Carriage Working Notices (CWNA).

CLC-liveried SO 3914 to Loose (thence WR 19th April 1967) with new CLC-liveried CK 15900 allocated to set 30th January 1957. CM&EE record cards include SO 3846 in set visit to Eastleigh Works visit 2nd April 1957 to 12th August 1957.

Afterwards SO 3846 was included in set 805 and SO 3845 was placed into set 880 after outshopping from Eastleigh Works 10th March 1958 as part of set 805.

CWNA 17th June 1957 SWD 6-coach set 880 is a 9-Buffet set (‘D’ Bournemouth – York) with coaches SK + RKB + SO not stencilled with set number. Formation is BSK 34261 + SK 24316 + SK + SO 3913 + RKB + SO + CK 15900 + CK 15038 + BTK 34262.

SO 3845 allocated to set by 9th June 1958.

CK 5922 Bulleid 15” diag.2318 new CLC-livery built Eastleigh 1st May 1951 to set 864 believed Green repaint Lancing A2 29th December 1959. Set 864 disbanded June 1963 and CK 5922 into set 858 thence set 885 February 1965.

Having been used in The Royal Wessex until June 1963, it is not known if CK 5922 retained its Carriage Roundel following the A2 varnish at Lancing (outshopped 11th November 1963). Withdrawn January 1967.

In an internal memo (Waterloo Inspector Ernie Tozier) dated 10th June 1963 and titled ‘Damaged Stock to Eastleigh’ SK 24322 is noted ‘Gangway face plate bent at bottom corner. Riveting and welding required. On hand at Clapham Jct’. Coach entered Eastleigh 17th June 1963 and left works 4th July 1963.

SK 24322 (built Eastleigh 26th April 1952) to Loose June 1963 thence set 701 February 1965. Transferred to ER 29th January 1972.

With the third coach appearing to be of Maunsell origin and ad-hoc strengthened to six vehicles, 4 Cor set 869 is hauled by V class 30917 ‘Ardingly’. Photographed at Oxted, this is the 4.40 pm London Bridge to Brighton train on Wednesday, 19th July 1961. The set had been repainted Green in March of that year and was reduced to a 3 Cor in April 1963.

1952 & The Royal Wessex
(Sets 884, 885 & 886)

During the winter of 1952-53 The Royal Wessex Mk1 coaches were taken out of service for overhaul, repainting /revarnishing and it was erroneously reported in the January 1953 Railway Observer that The Royal Wessex stock had been allocated set numbers 884, 885 and 886. 

A letter (from a Mr. Willgoss) correcting the situation was published in the May 1953 issue: 

‘There is no question of the original stock of this train being given set numbers. Sets 884-86 are B.R. 4-coach sets in the series 866-891. Certain parts of the three sets in question were, however, used in the “Royal Wessex” in the absence of the original stock, which was passing through works for overhaul. These three sets were not used complete, but the Weymouth Portion consisted of the whole of set 884 plus one CK of set 886; the Swanage portion of one BTK and one CK from set 885; and the Bournemouth portion of the two BTK’s of set 886 plus one SR post-war FK and the TO, Restaurant and Tavern Cars (The Green Man) being retained.

On the return of the original stock of the train, most of which I observed working on the 16th Dec., 1952 sets 884-886 resumed their normal 4-coach formations. I might point out that the return of S34157 and S13003 from works was somewhat delayed (I did not observe these coaches running in the train until 24th Jan., 1953). From 16th Dec., 1952, until this time, the SR FK was retained in the Bournemouth portion and a green SR semi-open BTK (S4276) worked in the Swanage portion.

 

 

1956 & The Royal Wessex
(Sets 877 & 891)

During the Winter of 1956 (to enable maintenance) specific The Royal Wessex vehicles were temporarily replaced by 4-sets nos. 877 & 891 which had similar seating capacities.
